In today’s post, we’re learning how to make this super cute, super easy DIY snow ski ornaments!
I just love handmade ornaments!
They make the perfect Christmas gift for someone who already has everything!
Plus this project is super easy to personalize with a date, a name, or whatever you’d like.
This really is my favorite homemade Christmas ornament I’ve ever created. I hope you guys like it as much as I do.
What You’ll Need
To make this DIY snow ski ornament, you only need a few items, most of which you probably already have at home.
If you don’t have these things at home, I easily found all of them at my local Dollar Tree store. (They’ve really stepped up their crafting game!)
You’ll Need:
- 2 popsicle sticks
- 2 bamboo skewers
- Felt
- Craft Paint
- Paint Brushes (not pictured)
- String
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun
As I said before, I found all this stuff at my local dollar store, but you could also find it at retailers like Michaels or Walmart.
Make sure you get the slim popsicle sticks, not the larger, tongue depressor size.
Brown felt is what I used to decorate the poles, but you could use any color you like.
For the craft paint, use whatever other colors you want to decorate the skis themselves, just make sure the paint for the poles matches the felt you use.
Use whatever color string you have that coordinates with the colors you plan to make your skis.
Once you’ve assembled all this, you’ll just need scissors and a hot glue gun.
*CAUTION* – Hot glue guns are dangerous and can cause severe burns. Please use them with care and do not let children operate them. Low temperature glue guns are a good option, but can still cause burns.
How To Make Your DIY Snow Ski Ornaments:
The best part of any craft is watching it all come together.
This specific project comes together really quickly, and is super cute when it’s done.
Cutting Your Pieces
The first thing you’ll need to do is trim your popsicle sticks and bamboo skewers.
Each piece needs to be about 3 1/2 inches long, so measure and mark each one.
Then use your scissors to carefully cut your popsicle sticks and bamboo skewers, trying not to split them.
Once you have them trimmed, you can use some sandpaper to even out the edges, but this step is optional.
Next you’ll want to paint the popsicle sticks and bamboo skewers for the skis and the poles.
Decorating the Skis
This is the part I feel like was the most fun when we created these DIY snow ski Christmas ornaments. I love customizing them.
I painted my popsicle sticks red, and after they dried, added some stripes and a simple snowflake just to decorate it.
You could easily add a year or a name to them if you like, making them more personalized.
I also painted my bamboo skewers brown at this point.
Putting Together The Poles
Once all my paint was try, I started assembling my ski poles.
First I cut four 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch squares of brown felt.
Then I poked the sharp end of the skewer through the middle of one of the squares of felt.
I secured it with a VERY small amount of glue. I actually used craft glue for this instead of hot glue, to make sure it was secure invisibly. But you could use hot glue for it as well, just make sure its a really small amount.
I repeated this on the second skewer as well.
After both skewers were dry, I used a small pair of scissors to trim the edges of the felt that was glued to the skewer into a circle.
Once this was complete, I took the other two felt squares, wrapped them around the top of the bamboo skewer and secured them with glue to create the handles of the ski poles for our DIY snow ski ornament.
Assembling Your DIY Snow Ski Ornament
I then glued the two already decorated popsicle stick ski pieces in a narrow “X” shape with some hot glue.
Then I glued the poles together in a wide “X” shape.
After both pieces were dry, I glued the poles on top of the skis.
Then I used a small amount of the string that I planned to use for the hanger part of the Christmas ornament, and tied it around the center of the skis.
This not only covers up the glue, but adds a really cute little touch to the ornament. I secured the bow on the back side of the ornament with a tiny spot of glue.
Finally, I added a “hanger” to the ornament by gluing about 4 or 5 inches of the string to the backside of the top of the skis.
And that’s it! The ornament is done! They turn our SO cute and they are really so easy to put together! Pictures don’t really do them justice.
You could make a large batch of these at one time very easily! You could even use a Cricut or a Silhouette machine to make some really nice vinyl stickers to customize them with!
These DIY snow ski ornaments also make a great set with another project on my site: these DIY sled ornaments!
